The initiative was first launched by Compassionate St. Augustine (Florida) in 2025 and quickly spread to other states and countries. To encourage broad participation, images and guidelines are shared freely. The aim is for Lights ON for Democracy to be seen everywhere over an extended period. In the United States, the event can offer a meaningful way to celebrate the 250th anniversary of democracy.
